Flight Suits are a type of Outfit released on June 6th, 2014, v7.1, on par with the release of How To Train Your Dragon 2. It's a sleek suit with leather membranes connected between the arms and the legs, similar to the likes of a modern Wingsuit, with extra fins on the back, the suit also contains extra protection like pauldrons and bracers, and a sleek helmet to match - in some suits, the female variant doesn't include the mask.

History

The first Flight Suit to be released, Shieldmaiden Flight Suit, was exclusive to Members and could be purchased as well for 500 Gems (400 for Members), there was also two other exclusive Flight Suits - Skullcrusher Flight Suit and Target Flight Suit - Skullcrusher Flight Suit would come in How To Train Your Dragon 2 Walmart DVDs and was a 1-use code[1]; however, they don't expire[2] meaning players can still manage to find an unused Skullcrusher Flight Suit code and redeem it. The Target Flight Suit could only be found in Target Game Cards for 15$ USD, they were also 1-use only and considered rarer than the Skullcrusher Flight Suit due to the distribution being more scarse.[3]

On March 2nd, 2017, v2.6.0, the Jungle Shieldmaiden Flight Suit was released, becoming the first Flight Suit to be released locked behind an Expansion, in this case, Secret of the Leviathan. Two more Flight Suits would later be released, the Skyrunner Flight Suit on June 27th, 2017, based on Independence Day (4th of July), and Forge Wing Suit on July 20th, 2018, a more differently designed Flight Suit in comparison to the formers. The Shieldmaiden Flight Suit would later be renamed to Viking Flight Suit and get a price change, 350 Gems (280 for Members).

Between 2019 to 2020, Dragon Armors would be released instead, till May 12th, 2020, v3.8.0, where Toothless Homecoming Armor, a Flight Suit based on a Toothless costume in How To Train Your Dragon: Homecoming short, would be released in Thawfest Event (2020). Flight Suits weren't really used on anything, until July 31st, 2019, v3.2.0, with Curse of the Hobgobbler releasing a section dedicated for a Flight Suit, and on v3.8.0, the highly requested Flight Club Flight Suit levels were released.

Around in mid-2020, a redeem code named "takeflight" will give you a free Skyrunner Flight Suit.

How to Use

The player must first equip the desired Flight Suit in the Avatar Customization Menu, you can choose to make it visible right now or not by clicking on the eye icon near the Outfit icon - when you purchase or receive a Flight Suit, it will be automatically equipped. Mind you that if the Flight Suit hasn't been equipped, it will take longer to load once you trigger it.

With the Flight Suit in hand, the player must fly with their Dragon to till a Flight Suit icon pops in, clicking on that button will trigger the Flight Suit and the player will begin to glide with the Dragon following you - before v3.7.0, the Dragon wouldn't follow and instead stay still - the last animation you left your Dragon on will be the looping animation while you're gliding so if you want both you and your Dragon to glide, you must trigger the Flight Suit when the Dragon is gliding. To regain altitude, the player can re-mount the Dragon at any time, and once the Flight Suit has been triggered, there should be a button that takes it off once you landed (see: Bugs section).

Contrary to the popular belief, players don't necessarily need a Dragon to glide, if the Flight Suit is equipped, the player can leap and trigger the Flight Suit, it's useful to practice for the Flight Club Flight Suit levels which will later on be put to test in the Curse of the Hobgobbler expansion. Players can pretty much glide anywhere else with exception of a few locations:

Gliding

Gliding with a Flight Suit is similar to gliding with a Dragon, to activate the Flight Suit, use E or press the button on the bottom right corner of the screen, next to the Dragon's Acceleration/Brake button and Fire button.

When gliding, use A and D or Left and Right Arrow Keys to turn left and right respectively, use S or Down Arrow Key to dive and unlike the Dragons' Flight Mechanism, use W or Up Arrow Key to brake. Since the player can't use either Shift or Space to brake and accelerate, instead, to gain speed, the player can both do a running start, and dive in exchange of losing altitude; use brake to stay at that altitude for a short period of time - diving then braking allows the player to slide in a straight line before losing speed and therefore altitude, it's useful in the Geyser section at the Curse of the Hobgobbler expansion.

Remember to avoid using braking for too long! If you do, you will lose speed and start gliding directly down, while diving can get the speed back, you are exchanging altitude for speed quickly and can result in a rapid decline with low margin of recovery.

Flight Suit vs. Dragon Armor

Dragon Armor, or Flight Armor, was released in June 11th, 2019, v3.1.0, on par with How To Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World and while they look the same control-wise, they are rather different.

Flight Suit Dragon Armor

  • Can be obtained in Store, special codes, Events, and through an Expansion.
  • Can be used in Dragon Tactics but isn't considered as Battle Equipment.
  • Are less in number but less costly

  • Can be optained in Store, Events, and through an Expansion.
  • Can be used in Dragon Tactics, boosting stats.
  • Are more in number but more costly.

Flight Suits usually have a sleeker, simpler design without any major theme with a few exceptions where the theme is very prominent and the design is a lot different (see: Skullcrusher, Toothless Homecoming); Dragon Armors take heavily inspriation from the named Dragon and/or Dragon Rider's Dragon or Character, with scales and complex design cues to further illustrate the Dragon/Character - for example, Eret Dragon Armor is a Dragon Armor based on the Rumblehorn with scale plates and coloration based on Skullcrusher, Valka Dragon Armor is based on her iconic outfit, with helmet and painting resembling the old Stormcutter Warpaint.

Bugs

  • In recent Updates, the remove Flight Suit button won't show up in some locations like New Berk and Eruptodon Island.
  • In v3.1.0, players can now glide in Flight ClubNeeds Check-in.
  • In v3.17.0, players can equip the Flight Suit or Dragon Armor and it will be automatically hidden, clicking on the eye icon will trigger an infinite load. This results in the player being able to glide without a Flight Suit/Dragon Armor in spite of having one equipped. This has been fixed.

Trivia

  • You can glide in the Wilderness' geyser as long as you have it equipped.
  • In spite of the Speed Stinger and adult Terrible Terrors being unable to fly, players can still glide with them.
  • Re-mounting after using the Flight Suit on a mission dragon will make you mount your own dragon instead.
    • This doesn't affect the mission.
