The Night Fury, or also known as the only existing speciemen, Toothless, is an exclusive Strike Class dragon released in May 6th, 2014 as part of v7.1 and the first dragon not available at the Store. It's a species originated from the first How To Train Your Dragon movie installment, for more information on the species, check the HTTYD Wiki's article on Night Fury. Players require an active 3 months or higher Membership or Trial Membership to obtain Toothless.
In v1.21, April 24th, 2016, Toothless receives the Alpha Toothless Look based on the Alpha display from How To Train Your Dragon 2. It's obtainable with an active 6 months or higher Membership.
In v3.0.0, February 21st, 2019, the Light Fury joins Toothless in becoming the 2nd dragon to be Membership exclusive.
On v3.24.0, July 17th, 2022[1], as part 1 of the 9th Annversary Update, Toothless received a model and animation revamp with Alpha and skins included becoming the first Dragon to get a full model revamp. The reception of the revamp is generally positive[2], althought some have expressed disappointment in the model and animations being too close/modified from the adult Night Lights[3][4], including the bumpiness being directly taken from the Night Lights.[5]
Obtainability
Toothless requires an active 3 months or higher Membership to be used anywhere in the game, they will occupy a Stable slot and behave like any other Dragon. Once the Membership ends, Toothless will be locked away until the player renews it. Trial Membership has the same functionality save for being available for Gems and doesn't autonew. In the early days, players were able to permanently own Toothless after a single Membership purchase until October 16th, 2014 - any player who purchased a 3 months or higher Membership before said date gets to keep Toothless without Membership, colloquially titled as "perma-toothless".
The Alpha Look has the same requirement as Toothless except the Membership tier is a lot stricter, 6 months minimun over the 3 months minimun. The Membership requires to be active to be able to use the Skin and just like Toothless, you cannot get rid of it once its rewarded and the skin will be locked once Membership ends. Unlike Toothlss, however, players can cheat the system by keeping the skin on Toothless and bypass the skin-lock system entirely, meaning a 3 month or Trial Member can use an Alpha Toothless if they purchase a 6 month or higher Membership, apply the skin and not remove it once it ends.Citation needed
Alpha Toothless
Released in April 24th, 2016, v1.21.0, Members with 6 or 12 months can access the Alpha Toothless Look based on the How To Train Your Dragon 2 events. The skin uses a seperate model with split dorsal spikes and adds a blue glowing effect on the back, nostrils and mouth, it will change the fire to include a blue sonic boom. Because the Alpha Look is a skin on its own, the other skins such as Racing Colors and Epic Warpaint have seperate variants with the Alpha Look under them, labeled as "Alpha Toothless [Skin Name] skin" (e.g: Alpha Toothless Racing Colors Skin) to distinguish from the normal skins - just like the default Alpha skin, the variants too are locked behind the same Membership tiers. Some Alpha skins may be released in Store or in Mystery Event Chests instead of being 6 to 12 Months Membership-locked as they should. As result, players can use the Alpha variant of the skin for the Alpha perks without Membership.
In spite of having a Hidden Glow variant for the Alpha Look, the game suffers from a bug that won't trigger the Hidden Glow change from normal to Alpha no matter what Alpha skin the player's Toothless is wearing. The player can apply Blue Algae Glow on an Alpha Toothless.
Perks
The Alpha Look grants a Battle Events-themed perk - three stats are boosted, Toothless' Damage goes from 28 to 31, Cooldown from 1.4 to 1.4, and MinRecharge from 5 to 5. The last two directly affect the recharge, from 40.5ms to 40.5, and all affect the DPS, from 24.6 to 27.2. Unlike the Titan Stage, the Dragon Tactics is untouched and there is no perks for Stable Missions and Dragon Energy, in exchange of a revertible appearance change.

Trivia
- Before the 9th Anniversary Disc One Update, Toothless' model animation was the most reused model across the whole game. Dragons such as Sand Wraith and Woolly Howl have the exact animations from head to toes, and Grapple Grounder utilized a "long neck variant" of the old Toothless model animation which was shared across other Dragons like Sliquifier. As result, these Dragons often look broken by comparison with other decently animated Dragons.
- Toothless has a customization screen like any other Dragon but cannot be modified.
- Toothless is the only Dragon with the Leader Skill.
- Before the release of Secret of the Leviathan, players thought the blue egg was a Night Fury egg until it turned out to be a Luminous Krayfin egg.
